YAY! I doed it! I published Winter Wonderland to Smashwords today. It’s still pending approval for the Premium Status, but it’s up on the main site already for purchase. It can be found here.
As with the Kindle formatting, it wasn’t hard, but extremely fiddly. Truth to tell, it wasn’t all that different from the Kindle formatting. One thing that Smashwords provides that Amazon doesn’t is the ability to download your own work for free. (At least I can’t find where to download other than to purchase. If someone knows different, please let me know) That makes it not only easier to proof your upload for formatting errors, but lets the author make digital copies to sell at conventions and shows. I’d imagine the latter is the larger rub. Amazon gets such a small slice of the Kindle book pie, they’re probably reluctant to lose any sales that way–and I can see that. Still it would be nice to be able to see an actual file instead of the somewhat wonky preview.
One other thing Smashwords does is format for about any electronic reading device out there. For free. I like that price.
